Scripture
Open your Bible to the reading for today. We follow the Life Journal Bible Reading Plan which helps us read 3-4 chapters a day, and finish the Bible in a year. When you are done with your daily reading, look for one verse that leaps out at your or is highlighted in your spirit. Write or type that Scripture in your journal.
-
Observation
Write what the passage means to its original audience and in its original context. This is the easiest part for most readers.
-
Action
Personalize what you have read by answering one question, “How will I be different today because of what I just read?” This is the most difficult part. It’s also the most important. Focus on your personal action, rather than how others should know this Scripture or practice it. Daily devotions is not sermon preparation or finding the best advice to help others. It is the Holy Spirit’s open heart surgery. It is sitting at the feet of Jesus and beholding Him till we are changed.

Prayer
Take the revelation, instruction, correction or question you received to the Lord in prayer. This can be as simple as asking God to help you use the Scripture, or asking Him for grace and greater insight to do what He reveals to you. Remember, prayer is a 2-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what our Heavenly Father has to say!
SOAP Example from Pastor Steve Cioccolanti
S: 2 SAMUEL 23:8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had…37 in all.
O: David did not do it alone. He was surrounded by good company and courageous people. It’s like a cycle. They were with him, learned from him and became better through his influence, but David also became stronger because of them. They helped each other become better versions of themselves.
A: You need to be surrounded by good people. Children need good parents. Artists need to be around better artists. Young people can learn from elders. Every Christian should be accountable to people who love you and want to see you grow.
P: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your good Word. Help me make good relationships with trustworthy people and people who want to see me grow. Thank You that I’m blessed to be a blessing to others also. I bless Discover Church and pray that I would have a word in season for its members, in Jesus’ Name.
